The U.S. has come a long way in terms of daily national COVID-19 cases, as the 7-day average dropped to its lowest point in nearly a year on May 17, to 32,434. Despite the 18 percent national decrease in the past week, some states are still seeing their own figures head in the wrong direction as the daily average vaccination rate continues to drop off, according to data from The New York Times....

That’s according to Covid Act Now, a group of experts from various backgrounds who analyze the available data and determine each state’s risk level for the spread of coronavirus. They use four indicators to make their judgment—if the cases are decreasing, if there’s enough testing, if the hospitals are ready, and if the state is tracing fast enough. According to the FDA announcement on Dec. 23, B&G Foods is voluntarily recalling the 5.37 oz. bottles of its Food Club Garlic Powder due to a packaging error. Instead of the product promised, the bottle of garlic powder may actually contain bacon-flavored bits. These bacon bits contain soy, an allergen that is not typically in garlic powder and is not declared on the label. “People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to soy run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the bacon-flavored bits contained in the recalled containers,” the FDA announcement warns....

We combed through the most recent cost-of-living metrics from the Council for Community & Economic Research, which compares the average cost of groceries, transportation, and utilities in each state to the national average. Then, we compiled the median price for a house in each state, according to Zillow’s real estate database. Together, these indicators created our final Cheap Score.
