In a new Rolling Stone interview, Swift talked with Sir Paul McCartney about the albums they put out during quarantine. When discussing her songwriting process for Folklore, Swift said she “went lyrically in a total direction of escapism and romanticism.” The singer-songwriter even said she went as far as to write songs imagining herself as a “pioneer woman in a forbidden love affair.” However, when McCartney brought up “Peace,” the 15th song on the album, Swift admitted that the track wasn’t based in folklore like the others. “‘Peace’ is actually more rooted in my personal life,” Swift explained. The song, she said, is about how “scary” it can be to fall in love as a person in the spotlight, especially when the person you’re with has a life that is not as public. “I, oftentimes, in my anxieties, can control how I am as a person and how normal I act and rationalize things, but I cannot control if there are 20 photographers outside in the bushes and what they do and if they follow our car and if they interrupt our lives,” she says. “I can’t control if there’s going to be a fake weird headline about us in the news tomorrow.” Swift has been dating actor Joe Alwyn since at least 2017. They didn’t make a formal announcement about their relationship, and both Swift and Alwyn have continued to keep most of their relationship out of the limelight. “I think that in knowing [Joe] and being in the relationship I am in now, I have definitely made decisions that have made my life feel more like a real life and less like just a storyline to be commented on in tabloids,” Swift told McCartney. “Whether that’s deciding where to live, who to hang out with, when to not take a picture—the idea of privacy feels so strange to try to explain, but it’s really just trying to find bits of normalcy.” And ultimately, she said that’s what the song “Peace” is all about. “Like, would it be enough if I could never fully achieve the normalcy that we both crave?” Swift asked, posing the song’s meaning as a question.
